There is one Greek tradition that is celebrated throughout all of the Greece - the Name day. A person's Name day is celebrated rather than his or her birthday. Great importance is attached to the name given to a child, the choice of which follows strict convention. For example, the eldest son in a family is often called after his paternal grandfather and the oldest daughter after her paternal grandmother.

Names are usually of religious origin hence a person's Name day is the same as the feast day of the Saint after which they were named. Since each island or area of Greece has its own particular collection of Saints, these are the names that the people living in that area are often given. Below, listed by month, are the dates of the feast days of the Saints most commonly used for names.
